“No Boys Allowed” Time

N.B.A. Time is a mentoring program for young boys, preparing them young adulthood, and ultimately manhood. N.B.A. Time works with youth specifically in low socioeconomic areas, addressing “real life” issues of their communities while introducing concepts and ideas to provide skills for successful transition to young adulthood and ultimately manhood.

It's a man's game. It's not for boys. No boys allowed in the NBA.” -Phil Jackson, 11 time NBA championship coach

In speaking on the proposed age limit of the National Basketball Association, Phil Jackson, then coach of the LA Lakers had this comment. The idea is that to be successful in the NBA, as in life, a certain level of maturity must be achieved. Young men must develop skills such as hard work, discipline, grit, self control, and character, while establishing positive relationships and viewing themselves appropriately as they relate to their community and beyond.

How do we achieve this:

Vox Invictus Mentoring is aligned with Phil Jackson's view, "It has to do a lot with the opening up your heart space and seeing people from where they're at...hav(ving) a lot of sympathetic ear to their plights as people. There is a time to be tough. There's also a time to really kind of touch those other areas, the spiritual, emotional and intellectual." -Phil Jackson, 11 time NBA championship coach

N.B.A. Time will work with middle school and high school males from low-socioeconomic communities to prepare them for young adulthood and ultimately manhood, providing programming through basketball to address the following areas:

  • Hard Work

  • Discipline

  • Grit

  • Self Control

  • Character

  • Positive Relationships

  • Self Awareness

By providing programming to build these skills, N.B.A. Time’s ultimate goal is to prepare each participant, those in middle school and high school, for life long success. N.B.A. Time will also include social-emotional learning, giving participants tools for success in face of adversity.

"Feelings can't be ignored, no matter how unjust or ungrateful they seem."

-Anne Frank, German-born Dutch-Jewish diarist. Holocaust victim.

Implementation:

N.B.A. Time will have two hour sessions, twice a week, to work with middle school and high school boys.

Participants will have sessions that include instruction and programming, along with designated time for healthy athletic competition through basketball. The initial goal is to impact at least 20 boys each session.
